Gapado is a flat island of farmland and stone walls off the southwest corner of Jeju, ten minutes by ferry from Unjin port. Its highest point is 20.5 m.

The ferry sells a round trip, and the boat home is decided by the boat out. The only way to change it is to ask at the port on the day.

How do you get from Incheon Airport to Gapado island, Jeju?

The direct flight is new. Jeju Air started Incheon to Jeju on 12 May 2026, and on 14 September it announced, as Global Economic reported, that it would keep the route until 27 March 2027, going from two flights a week to three from 2 November. Check its site for times. The other way is the airport railway from Incheon to Gimpo and one of the many Gimpo to Jeju flights.

From Jeju Airport, bus 151 is an express that ends at the Moseulpo south harbour passenger terminal, which is Unjin port, by an aggregator’s route page. It calls at Donggwang transfer and O’sulloc on the way. We could not open the Jeju bus site, so we have no times or fare for it.

So treat Gapado as a day from somewhere in Jeju, not a day from Incheon.

Gapado island ferry: can you choose your boat back?

No. The operator, Areumdaun Seomnara (아름다운섬나라), answers this in its own FAQ:

배 정원이 정해져 있기 때문에 가는 시간 선택 시 오는 시간은 자동 지정됩니다.

That is: the boat’s capacity is fixed, so when you choose the time out, the time back is assigned automatically. Tickets are only for that set time, and you cannot change it at will. A change can only be asked for on the day, at the port, depending on free seats and the weather.

Haema Travel, which resells the same tickets, puts it more bluntly: you cannot decide for yourself what time you leave Gapado. Its day-trip ticket is for a same-day return only.

The timetable page adds the reason. Because of passenger capacity, the time you come off the island depends on the time you left Unjin, so anyone staying the night, fishing or working has to say so before buying.

10:0012:20about 2 hours
11:0014:20about 3 hours
12:0014:20about 2 hours
14:0016:10about 2 hours

The pairs are Haema Travel’s, for 25 to 31 October and all of November 2026. The operator’s regular timetable lines up the same five pairs, and adds two boats from Gapado at 09:20 and 10:20 with no boat out to match, and a 15:50 from Unjin with no boat back. With 16:10 the last boat back in both tables, treat the 15:50 as a boat for people sleeping on the island.

The last column is the 10-minute crossing taken off each gap, so every day trip gives you between about two and about three hours. The 11:00 is the only long one.

During the barley festival the operator adds boats from Unjin, which its timetable gives only as “매시 30분 간격”, every half hour or at half past each hour; we cannot tell which. Extra boats change the pairs, so read the time back off your own ticket.

What the English guides get wrong

The Soul of Seoul, updated on 13 October 2026, is the best English page we found, and it does say tickets are sold as a round-trip set and that the last boat out means a night on the island. What it does not say is that the boat out fixes the boat back. It also gives two different timetables on the same page: 09:00, 10:00, 14:00 and 16:00 in one place, 09:00, 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00 in its FAQ, with a last return at 16:20. The operator’s last regular boats are 15:50 out and 16:10 back. Its rule that tickets must be bought 40 minutes ahead is the operator’s rule for collecting a booked ticket; walk-up sales run until 10 minutes before sailing.

Wikipedia’s English page says a ferry runs twice daily; the operator’s timetable has more. If you plan a half-hour visit or a long lunch around any English timetable, the ticket will overrule you.

How much is the Gapado island ferry, and what ID do you need?

WhoReturn fare + marine park feeTotal
Adult14,500 won + 1,000 won15,500 won
Youth (middle and high school)14,500 won + 800 won15,300 won
Child (primary school)7,300 won + 500 won7,800 won

That is the operator’s fare table. Children from 24 months who are not yet at school pay the 7,300 won child fare without the park fee, and under 24 months ride free. Seniors aged 65 and over pay 11,600 won with no park fee. On top of it, the fuel surcharge for Gapado is 2,600 won a person for October and November 2026, and the operator says the rate is set by the date you book. The reseller says the park fee is paid in cash.

Foreigners must show a passport, or a residence card issued by Korean immigration. The operator’s boarding guide says other foreign ID is not accepted, and its FAQ rules out copies and ID stored on a phone. You also fill in a boarding form, one per group of up to six.

The operator’s timetable page says booking on its site is open until the day before. On the day, tickets are sold at the port, first come first served. If you booked ahead, collect the ticket at the counter 40 minutes before sailing; all ticket sales stop 10 minutes before each sailing. A refund is free up to the day before, and costs 20% on the day.

Leave the bike behind. The FAQ says adult bicycles, kickboards and personal mobility devices cannot go on the boat, and luggage is limited to 15 kg.

Gapado island things to do in two hours

  • Walk Olle route 10-1. The operator’s island page puts the course at 5 km and 1 to 2 hours from Sangdong port; its FAQ says about 1 hour 30 minutes. With two hours on the island, that is most of your visit.
  • The barley. The island is known for its green barley, and the operator runs extra boats for the barley festival.
  • The art space. Gapado’s culture and art creation space was built by Jeju province and Hyundai Card, and the operator says it won a Korean Architecture award in 2019.
  • Hamel. The operator’s page says Hendrick Hamel’s ship of 1653 is thought to have drifted ashore here, and calls that a guess. So do we.

There is no boat from Gapado to Marado. The operator’s FAQ says you go back to Unjin and take the Marado ferry from there.

Gapado island population: who lives there

The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture counts 218 people in 137 households at the end of June 2024. It puts the island at about 0.87 square km, about 2.2 km south of Unjin port. The operator’s page gives 0.84 square km.

People have lived on Gapado since 1842. The encyclopedia says the name comes from the waves that wash over the island in a typhoon, and that it was a black cattle ranch in 1751. The operator calls it the lowest inhabited island in Asia; that is its claim, and we have not checked it.

When not to go

  • On a day you need to be somewhere by early afternoon. If you miss the booking window, you get whichever boat has seats, and with it whichever return.
  • For a short look. No pair gives less than about two hours on the island, so a 30-minute visit is not on the timetable.
  • With a bike. Adult bicycles cannot board.
  • In rough weather. The FAQ says you can find out whether boats sail after 8 am that morning. Rain alone does not cancel a boat; wind and waves do.

What we have not checked

  • Booking online with a foreign passport. We read the operator’s site but did not complete a booking. Same-day tickets at the port are the fallback.
  • Bus 151 times and fare. Our only source is an aggregator’s route page, and it prints neither.
  • Jeju Air’s winter flight times. The airline announced the days, not the times we could confirm.
  • The 2027 barley festival dates. The operator adds boats during it; we found no dates for the next one.
  • Pairs after November. The table above is for 25 October to 30 November 2026. The operator’s line is 064-794-5490, 08:00 to 16:30.

If any of this has changed, tell us on the contact page and we will correct it with the date. For entry to Jeju itself, see Jeju visa-free entry.

Questions people actually ask

Gapado island ferry schedule: what times run from Unjin port?
For 25 to 31 October and all of November 2026, the reseller Haema Travel lists five day-trip sailings from Unjin port: 09:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Each comes with its own return from Gapado: 11:20, 12:20, 14:20, 14:20 and 16:10. The operator, Areumdaun Seomnara, lines up the same times in its timetable and adds a 15:50 from Unjin with no boat back. The crossing takes about 10 minutes.
Can you choose your return on the Gapado island ferry?
No. The operator's FAQ says that because seat numbers are fixed, the time back is assigned automatically when you choose the time out, and tickets cannot be changed at will. Changes are only asked for on the day at the port, subject to free seats and weather. The reseller says the same: you cannot set your own time to leave Gapado.
How do you get to Gapado island, Jeju, from Incheon Airport?
Fly to Jeju, either on Jeju Air's direct Incheon to Jeju flight (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2 November 2026 to 27 March 2027, by its announcement) or from Gimpo after the airport railway. From Jeju Airport, express bus 151 runs from the stop Jeju International Airport 4 to its last stop at Moseulpo south harbour passenger terminal, which is Unjin port. The ferry from there takes about 10 minutes.
What is the Gapado island population?
218 people in 137 households at the end of June 2024, by the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture: 105 men and 113 women. The island covers about 0.87 square km and its highest point is 20.5 m. People have lived there since 1842.
How long is the Gapado island Olle trail, and what are the things to do?
The operator's island page gives the Olle course as 5 km and 1 to 2 hours from Sangdong port, and its FAQ says about 1 hour 30 minutes to walk Olle 10-1. The rest is the barley fields, which have their own festival, and the Gapado art space built by Jeju province and Hyundai Card. Bikes cannot go on the ferry.
