Byeongsan Seowon is a Confucian academy on a bend of the Nakdong river in Andong, built in 1613 in memory of Ryu Seong-ryong. Its long pavilion looks straight across the water at a wall of cliffs. Herald Korea calls the view from that pavilion the academy’s signature.

Hahoe Village, the famous one, is about 10 minutes away by car, by Seoul Shinmun’s account. Both are UNESCO sites.

Andong city counted 15,009 visitors at Hahoe and 2,773 at Byeongsan Seowon over 23 to 25 May 2026, as Herald Korea reported. The second one is harder to reach, and the bus is the reason.

The airport page prints no fare and no ride time, and says times can change without notice. Check the T-money GO app before you land.

It also marks the 15:40 as continuing to Yeongdeok until 31 October, with a separate 15:40 on the Andong route from 1 November. Both call at Andong.

How often does bus 210 go to Byeongsan Seowon?

Three times a day, by the academy’s own directions page.

11:0012:25
14:0515:30

The page puts the ride at about 80 minutes, with the academy as the end of the line. Andong’s tourism site lists bus 210 for both Hahoe and Byeongsan.

The same site gives a fare of 1,500 won, with a free transfer within an hour of tagging off.

The Korea Herald wrote in 2023 that bus 210 “operates every 45 minutes”, adding that the schedule may vary. No timetable we read gives the academy anything close, so treat that as a Hahoe answer at best.

The academy’s page is undated. Andong city has also posted a revised timetable for its Pungsan and Pungcheon routes, in force from 1 August 2026, as a spreadsheet we could not open. So treat these three times as the academy’s last published reading, and confirm at the stop.

Why the road in is still part gravel

The last stretch is 군도 5호선, Byeongsan-gil. Pressian reported in July 2025 that Andong improved 2.2 km of it between 2019 and 2021, about 1.4 km in ochre-tinted concrete and the rest left as crushed stone, 5.0 to 5.5 m wide.

The city’s explanation was the heritage permit: the conditions attached to building near the academy ruled out a fully paved road. Pressian also reported the verges giving way, and a tour bus slipping a rear wheel into the ditch while passing a car.

What to see at Byeongsan Seowon

The academy is built on a slope, low at the front and higher towards the back. Seoul Shinmun’s 2022 walk-through is the source for the names below.

Mandaeru, the long open pavilion. The name comes from a line by the poet Du Fu, roughly “the green cliffs are worth facing late in the day”. The Korea Herald reported in 2023 that it was generally off-limits to visitors, so treat climbing it as unlikely and the view from below as the plan.

Jangpangak, the woodblock store, and Jondeoksa, the shrine at the top. The shrine is the only painted building in the academy.

The plaque it never got

Seoul Shinmun tells the story. The academy grew out of Pungak Seodang, a school founded in 1563 and moved to Byeongsan at Ryu Seong-ryong’s suggestion. In 1863 the court decided to grant it a royal name plaque.

The king died soon after, the plaque never arrived, and the academy still goes by the name of the place. The same report notes there is no modern exhibition hall on site, and the old toilet survives.

The academy’s visitor page says the English, Japanese and Chinese leaflets are at the museum entrance. Seoul Shinmun reported in 2022 that there is no museum on site, so ask at the gate.

The academy opens 09:00 to 18:00 in summer and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter, by its own site. No food, no smoking anywhere on the grounds, and no pets except guide dogs.

When not to go

  • On a rite day, unless you came for it. The academy holds its rites on the first jeong day of the third and ninth lunar months. We have not found whether visitors are let in, so check the lunar calendar and phone 054-858-5929.
  • After the 14:05 has gone. There is no later bus to the academy on the published timetable, so the way in is a taxi or the path from Hahoe.
  • Until 25 October 2026, if you want it quiet. Gyeongbuk Maeil reports the 2026 World Heritage Festival Andong runs at Hahoe, Bongjeongsa, Dosan and Byeongsan until that date.

What we have not checked

  • Return times. The academy’s page lists arrivals and no departures. We assume each bus turns back from the terminus, but nothing we read says when.
  • Which time is which. The page prints the six times in a row under start and end. We read them as three departures and three arrivals.
  • Whether the three times are current. The page is undated. Andong city’s timetable list opens, but the 1 August 2026 spreadsheet for the Pungcheon routes opens only in a browser script we could not run.
  • The airport fare and ride time. Both come from an aggregator, not the operator. Treat them as that aggregator’s reading on 14 October 2026.
  • Mandaeru access. The off-limits report is from 2023.
  • Taxi fares. Not published. The city lists Pungsan taxis on (054) 858-3488 and (054) 856-4430.

If any of this has changed, tell us on the contact page and we will correct it with the date. For another place the buses barely reach, see Danyang. For a south-coast trip where one ticket covers two sites, see Suncheon Bay.

Questions people actually ask

Andong Hahoe Village to Byeongsan Seowon: is there a bus?
Andong's tourism site lists bus 210 for both places, and bus 210 is the only bus it names for Byeongsan Seowon. The academy's own directions page lists three 210 runs a day that reach it, and prints 09:30, 12:25 and 15:30 under the academy end, which reads as the arrivals. Between those, the choices are a taxi from the Pungsan side or the walking path, which the Korea Herald put at 4 km in 2023.
Byeongsan Seowon Andong: how do you get there by bus?
By bus 210 from the stop opposite Kyobo Life in central Andong. The academy's page lists departures at 08:20, 11:00 and 14:05, a ride the page puts at about 80 minutes, and the city lists a 1,500 won fare. By car it is about 15 minutes from Seoandong IC. The page prints no return times, so ask the driver when the bus turns back.
What is the Byeongsan Seowon Confucian academy?
A Joseon private academy built in 1613 in memory of the scholar-official Ryu Seong-ryong, on the site of a school moved there in his lifetime. It is Historic Site No. 260 and was one of nine academies inscribed by UNESCO in 2019. Its best-known building is Mandaeru, a long open pavilion facing the river and cliffs.
Byeongsan Seowon reviews: is it worth visiting?
If you want a UNESCO site with a fraction of Hahoe's crowd, yes. Andong city counted 15,009 visitors at Hahoe Village and 2,773 at Byeongsan Seowon over the same three days in May 2026. Entry and parking are free. The cost is the bus: three runs a day, so plan the day around them or budget for a taxi.
Is there an Incheon Airport to Andong bus?
Yes. The Incheon Airport bus timetable lists a direct bus to Andong from stop 10B-2 at Terminal 1, four runs a day. A bus timetable aggregator lists them at 10:50, 12:40, 15:40 and 18:10, taking 3 hours 17 to 3 hours 40 minutes, at 54,000 won premium class. The airport page prints no fare, so treat that as the aggregator's reading.
