Gyodong is an island off the north-west corner of Ganghwa, close enough to North Korea that its one way in, the Gyodong Bridge, passes Marine Corps checkpoints where marines have stopped cars to check ID. The English tourism page still describes a paper form. Korean reports describe two changes since: QR registration by May 2026, and from 14 September a pilot in which a camera reads the number plate and cars pass without stopping, from 4 am to 8 pm.

Incheon Airport to Ganghwa island and Gyodong by bus

The public route from Incheon Airport to Gyodong island is one train and two buses: the airport railway to Geomam, bus 90 to the Ganghwa bus terminal, then bus 18 to Daeryong-ri on Gyodong. Ganghwa county publishes both bus routes.

The first leg is the airport railway, covered in the airport to Seoul guide. Take the all-stop train, not the Express, which does not stop at Geomam.

The second leg is bus 90. Ganghwa county lists it at 148 runs, from Ganghwa terminal through Gimpo University, Masong and Geomam station to Bupyeong. It is the most frequent of the county’s Incheon routes. Ride it to the end at Ganghwa terminal.

The third leg is bus 18, run by Gunnae Bus as a loop: Ganghwa terminal, Daeryong-ri, Wolseonpo, then back through Daeryong-ri to the terminal, 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 for the round. The county lists 11 runs, the first leaving the terminal at 06:10 and the last at 20:30. It also prints a last time of 21:30 for the other end of the line without saying which stop that is, and it does not print when the last bus passes Daeryong-ri on the way back. It was last updated in August 2025, so treat the board at the Daeryong-ri stop as the timetable that counts.

From 14 September 2026 the marine checkpoints at the Gyodong Bridge run a pilot in which cameras read number plates, and cars pass at 40 km/h or less without stopping. Ilgan Gyeonggi reported that the pilot runs from 4 am to 8 pm, that the old face-to-face check applies after 8 pm, and that the trial ends on 27 November 2026. The same report says the system keeps the security checks the area needs while cutting the wait for residents and tourists.

Before that, Wikitree reported in May 2026 that the handwritten pass had already given way to QR code registration: visitors bring ID such as a driver’s licence, and checkpoint staff issue a pass to display on the windscreen. That is a news report rather than a notice from the marines or the county, so take it as the procedure described in May.

What no report says is how a camera that reads plates handles a car it has never seen. The March plan describes ending the marines’ face-to-face checks on residents, and the September report talks about cutting the wait for residents and tourists without saying whether a visitor’s car skips the QR step. Expect to be waved into a lane and asked to register.

The checks themselves are old. Gyodong lies inside the civilian control line, the band along the border where the military controls who enters, and Kyeonggi Ilbo counts two checkpoints on the Gyodong Bridge, the island’s only entrance. In March the paper reported that residents stopping for ID checks at the border posts could take more than an hour to get through.

The same March report has Ganghwa county and the Marine 2nd Division agreeing to phase out daytime face-to-face checks across the whole area north of the control line, under the headline that the marines’ checks were ending after 73 years. The first four sites include the Gyodong Bridge entrance. The same report says the defence ministry had already been trialling a CCTV-based digital check since October 2025, without naming the posts, so September is the first dated pilot at this bridge rather than the first camera.

The county is paying for it. Kyeonggi Ilbo put the county budget at 700 million won for 30 to 40 cameras at 10 to 12 points. Sisa Police reported the county inspecting the camera works near the Gyodong Bridge in July, in a project covering four civilian control line posts.

Incheon’s English tourism page for Gyodongdo, last updated in September 2021, tells visitors to fill out a visit request form with the military police and obtain a visitation card, and to bring ID. That was the procedure when it was written. By the May 2026 report the paper form had become a QR registration, and by September a camera lane.

Night has two published versions. The Korean Wikipedia entry for the bridge says it is closed to traffic from 8 pm to 6 am, citing a Shinailbo report from August 2014, a month after opening. Both 2026 reports say otherwise: in March, Kyeonggi Ilbo wrote that face-to-face checks would stay after dark, and in September Ilgan Gyeonggi wrote that they apply after 8 pm. Read the night closure as the 2014 rule, and still treat 8 pm as the time to be back over the bridge.

The reports also leave out two things a visitor needs. None of them says how passengers on bus 18 are handled, and none mentions foreign visitors. So treat a passport as something to carry, because the old procedure asked for ID and nothing published since says a foreigner is exempt.

Ganghwa island things to do on Gyodong: market, garden, monorail

The three stops on Gyodong are Daeryong market, Hwagae garden with its monorail and observatory, and the Manghyangdae lookout. Daeryong market is at the bus 18 stop in Daeryong-ri; for Manghyangdae, 15 minutes away by car, you need a taxi or a bike. This page covers Gyodong only, not the main island of Ganghwa.

Daeryong market was built by people from Yeonbaek, across the water in what is now North Korea, who settled on Gyodong during the Korean War. The bike course listing describes it as an alley market the refugees built in the image of the Yeonbaek market they could not return to. It is a few lanes of old shops, and it is where bus 18 drops you.

Hwagae garden (화개정원) is the county’s garden on the slopes of Hwagaesan, with a monorail up to an observatory. The tourism listing calls the observatory the largest skywalk-style observatory in the country and puts North Korea’s Yeonbaek plain 7 km away.

Adult admission5,000 won5,000 won

The listing gives 3,000 won for children, teenagers and over-65s, free entry for under-sevens and Ganghwa residents, and opening every day of the year. The Ganghwa island monorail costs 14,000 won return on the same listing. That is a tourism database entry rather than the garden’s own price board, so treat 14,000 won as the figure to check at the ticket desk.

Manghyangdae (망향대) is a lookout on Bammeorisan with telescopes pointed at the North. The bike course listing puts it 15 minutes by car from Daeryong-ri, or about an hour by bike. The name means a place to look towards home.

Gyodong island map: how close the North is

Gyodong island sits off the north-west of Ganghwa island, and the tourism listing puts North Korea 2.6 km away across the water. That distance is why the island is inside the civilian control line and why the bridge has a checkpoint at all.

The border shows in the fields. In the photographs below, a fence runs along the far edge of the Insa-ri rice fields, and the Insa-ri social welfare centre has loudspeakers on its roof.

The peace bike path (평화자전거길) goes round the island. The course listing gives it as about 30 km in its text and 32 km as the course total, with bikes rented at Gyodong Jebijip near Daeryong market.

Is Ganghwa island worth visiting? A half day or a full day on Gyodong

Gyodong is worth a day if you want to see the border up close: North Korea 2.6 km across the water, a market built by refugees from the far shore, and telescopes at Manghyangdae. It is not quiet. Kyeonggi Ilbo reported more than 2 million tourists a year coming for Hwagae garden and Daeryong market.

PlanRouteWatch for
Half day on the islandBus 18 to Daeryong-ri, the market, Hwagae garden and the monorailMonorail runs to 17:30 on weekdays, garden last entry 18:00
Full day by bikeBus 18 in, bike from Gyodong Jebijip round the peace path to Manghyangdae30 to 32 km; return the bike before the last bus 18

If you only have a layover, read the transit entry rules first. Gyodong is a long way from the airport, and every leg on this page is outside it. For something closer with the same island feel, Sindo and Muuido are both on the airport’s own island or just off it.

When not to go

Avoid planning to cross the bridge after 8 pm. The camera pilot covers 4 am to 8 pm only. After that the September report has the marines checking cars in person, and a 2014 report said the bridge was shut at night altogether.

Avoid counting on the camera lane after 27 November 2026, the date the pilot is due to end. The March agreement aims to end daytime checks for good, but none of the reports I read says what happens on 28 November.

The bridge is the island’s only entrance, and Kyeonggi Ilbo describes the traffic at its two checkpoints as seriously congested, with more than 7.7 million vehicles a year. The camera pilot was built to fix exactly that, so treat a queue as possible until it is shown to be gone.

What we have not checked

  • How bus passengers and foreign visitors are handled under the camera pilot. Every report talks about cars and number plates.
  • Whether a visitor’s car still registers by QR before the camera lane, and whether QR registration is still in use in October. The May account is a news report, not a notice from the marines or the county.
  • Whether the pilot continues after 27 November 2026 or becomes permanent.
  • The bus 18 timetable today. The county page was updated in August 2025.
  • The monorail fare and garden prices come from a tourism database listing, not the garden’s own notice.
  • The night rule at the bridge. The 2026 report says face-to-face check after 8 pm; the 2014 report behind Wikipedia said closed from 8 pm to 6 am. No notice from the marines or the county states the current night rule.
  • Which stop the 21:30 last time on bus 18 refers to. The county page does not say, and the attached timetable file was not opened.
  • Bike hire hours and prices at Gyodong Jebijip.
  • Bus fares on routes 90 and 18. The county pages list routes and runs, not fares.

If you have crossed the Gyodong Bridge since 14 September, on the bus or in a car, tell me what happened at the checkpoint. That is the one part of this page no report covers.

Questions people actually ask

How do I get from Incheon Airport to Ganghwa island and Gyodong island by public transport?
Take the airport railway all-stop train to Geomam station, then bus 90 to the Ganghwa bus terminal. Ganghwa county lists 148 runs on route 90. At the terminal, change to bus 18, a loop through Daeryong-ri on Gyodong that the county lists at 11 runs, the first leaving the terminal at 06:10 and the last at 20:30.
Do you still need to fill in a form at the Gyodong island checkpoint?
Not a paper one, by the latest reports. Wikitree reported in May 2026 that the handwritten pass had been replaced by QR code registration, with ID required and a pass shown on the windscreen. Since 14 September 2026 the checkpoints also run a pilot in which cameras read number plates and cars pass at 40 km/h or less without stopping, from 4 am to 8 pm, with the face-to-face check after 8 pm. The pilot runs to 27 November 2026. No report says whether a first-time visitor's car skips the QR step, or how bus passengers and foreigners are handled, so carry a passport.
Is Ganghwa island worth visiting from Seoul or the airport?
For a day, Gyodong is the part of Ganghwa that repays the trip: a market built by people who fled the North in the Korean War, an observatory looking at North Korea across the water, and a bike path along the border fence. Kyeonggi Ilbo reported more than 2 million tourists a year coming for Hwagae garden and Daeryong market, so it is not empty.
How long is the Ganghwa island monorail and what does it cost?
The Hwagaesan monorail on Gyodong island takes 20 minutes each way, 40 minutes return, and runs 09:30 to 17:30 on weekdays and 08:30 to 18:30 at weekends, by its tourism listing. The same listing prints two adult fares, 12,000 won and 14,000 won, and the garden listing gives 14,000 won, so treat 14,000 won as the likely price and check at the desk. Garden admission of 5,000 won for adults is separate.
Where is Gyodong island on a map?
Gyodong is a separate island off the north-west corner of Ganghwa island, in Ganghwa county, Incheon. The Gyodong Bridge, opened on 1 July 2014, joins it to Ganghwa. The tourism listing puts North Korea 2.6 km from the island across the water.
